How deep is a mother’s love? Will determination and honor carry you among the stars? A story of loss and discovery, We Are Not Prey, balances the darkness of despair and the joy of new beginnings. This science fiction adventure blends magic and technology with the adventures of Ruth, a normal human, pushed into extraordinary situations. Ruth’s transformation takes her from Earth to worlds and situations of which she never dreamed. Her second life, her journey through the star paths as an Unfetter Mage, starts here.

We Are Not Prey Unfettered Mage Volume 1 Taki Drake Books

We are not Prey by Taki Drake
This is an abduction story with a totally new twist. The heroine is a grandmother named Ruth, fighting to keep her surviving family and friends alive. She has acquired a small group that look to her for her strength and comfort.
The slavers torture and kill their multi-species slaves. Ruth is pushed too far when the remaining slaves are all hauled into an arena for the slavers to torture and eat. When her grandson is taken she has been pushed too far. Her son rescues her grandson but is injured. She snaps and it causes her to transition into something new and dangerous.
She is able to defeat the slavers but now she has no control over her powers and the welfare of the surviving slaves. One man recognizes what has taken place and helps her through the rest of her transition. He is an honorable person and begins to help organize the survivors to get back home.
I am not going to give any more of this delightful story away, but I will tell you I spent an enjoyable evening dwelling in this author’s world. I believe that it is going to be a new series. {At least I sure hope so.}
Going to give this 5 stars but it does have small editing issues.

We Are Not Prey Unfettered Mage Volume 1 Taki Drake Books Reviews

We Are Not Prey was an interesting read. Ms. Drake pounded on the question of a mother's love in the description and the author delivered a book answering this question. And using this question as the springboard, the author weaved a fairly well written, mixed genre story of a woman kidnapped by aliens and how she managed to turn everything around.

The problem for me, though, was that the author fell into the trap of making the heroine too overpowering and, having boxed herself in, desperately tried to find ways to challenge the main character. The result, in my view, was a story that became utterly predictable but unrealistic in certain ways.

SPOILER ALERT!

SPOILER ALERT!

(LAST CHANCE TO AVOID THE SPOILER!)

The MC's mind broke due to the horrors she witnessed at the hands of her alien captors and then she suddenly turned into a mage, which in Taki Drake's view was synonymous with an all-powerful entity (think Q from Star Trek). Without explaining how it happened, the MC killed all 42 billion members of the offending species in existence. I personally think that the author went overboard at this point and spent the rest of the book trying to salvage the story, seeking to challenge her with various feeble assassination attempts that predictably failed and turned the story into one big yawner. The author could have avoided this by simply putting restrictions on the MC's powers as a mage.

The second problem was that even if we were to accept Ruth as the all powerful mage, did the rest of the galaxy have to accept her ascendance? Where were the violent, belligerent, hostile races? Where was the death star-like weapon to blow up the planet that the new mage was on? Instead, the reader was treated with feeble attempts on the mage's life via poisoning. How boring. It felt like the author didn't know what to do with the mage or care aside from improving the character's love life.

It is said that power corrupts. If Ruth was an ordinary human, then wasn't she also susceptible to the corruption of her power and tempted to use it for evil? Why wasn't the MC tempted to make war with the rest of the galaxy and force everyone to accept her as their new queen? The author never pondered these issues in the book as she should have. I brought up these points not to criticize the author, but rather to illustrate the danger of having an overpowered main character in a book without adequately explaining how the MC decide what to do with that awesome power. If the author decides to write a sequel, then perhaps she will address these issues then.
Selected this book because Michael offered comments on this author. I was not disappointed. Interesting flow to the story. Good use of how she uses magic. Good character building. Thank you to the author for a good story
I liked the book, too bad it is short. I hope there is another one for this series. I am still baffled by the culture mash of the author.
Well some loose ends have not been tied yet, I sure hope that change.
This book kept me up until 4 in the morning just because I couldn’t stop reading! This was the most engrossing book I’ve read in a very long time - so thank you, Taki - starting the 2nd book 📖 now.....
The book starts out how the mc gets her powers. The stories use mage magic when needed but mist of the time it takes a backseat to more normal means. This makes the story interesting as a reader you don't know how the problems are going to be solved.
The protagonist - Ruth - undergoes a crisis that causes her to become a Mage. (The crisis takes the form of evil aliens who kidnap humans - and victims from other planets - in order to eat them sadistically.) Mages are rare. Basically, they can do anything. This is bad for story-telling, because their can be no plot tension the Mage doesn't allow. For example, there is an evil politician who only survives to the end of the book because Ruth neglects to order him to recount his crimes - something she has done to other villainous characters. Once Ruth becomes a Mage, her story can only be a triumphal march interrupted by bouts of poor judgment.
This story of Ruth, an Earth woman stolen by giant insects in a raid on various Earth towns and how she becomes a Mage, or wielder of magic powers that are beyond deadly is very entertaining. I give it four stars because I enjoyed Ruth, her story, the guy she falls in love with and how she liberates scores of slave-carrying starships. The opening scenes of slavery to a species that eats intelligent folks like snacks is very convincing. Her decimation of the species is warranted. BUT, this story badly needs a proofreader. Every chapter has sentences with non-conforming verbs, as in a sentence that begins with past tense "was" and then uses another verb in the present tense. There are also misplaced quote marks, and interior voice sentences that are presented as if they were dialogue. The author is highly imaginative and knows how to create characters you will care about. But there are some story logic lapses and too many typos/grammar errors for this to be worth its full price. Worth reading.
